De to beslektede sjeler som her er foreviget, er dikteren William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878) og maleren Thomas Cole (1801-1848), som regnes som grunnlegger av The Hudson River School, en uformell gruppe amerikanske romantiske landskapsmalere.

I forbindelse med Thomas Coles bortgang i 1848, bare 47 år gammel, skrev William Cullen Bryant en nekrolog. Deres felles venn kunstsamler og mesen Jonathan Sturges (1802-1874) skrev senere et brev til Bryant, hvor det blant annet nevnes:

Soon after you delivered your oration in the life and death of our lamented friend Cole, I requested Mr. Durand to paint a picture in which he should associate our departed friend and yourself as kindred spirits. … I hope that you will accept the picture from me as a token of gratitude for the labor of love performed on that occasion.
