En irländsk opinionsundersökning gjord av Ipsos för Irish Times visar att 59 procent av de tillfrågade vill ha en ”mer sluten” immigrationspolitik på Irland för att säkerställa att färre migranter kommer till landet.

Enligt undersökningen anser 19 procent att den nuvarande politiken är lämplig, medan 16 procent vill liberalisera den ytterligare.

Den klara majoriteten för en skärpt invandringspolitik kommer efter att människor har reagerat negativt på konsekvenserna av den stora invandringen till ön de senaste åren, framför allt bestående av asylsökande.

Motståndet mot asylinvandring har också resulterat i mordbrand mot planerade asylmottagningar, rapporterar den irländska nättidningen The Journal:

Multiple protests have been held over the past year in towns and areas across the country against local buildings being used to house asylum seekers. There have also been multiple arson attacks on such buildings, including last week when an old nursing home was set on fire in south Dublin, after rumours circulated that it was to be used to house asylum seekers.

Människor är också oroliga för bostadsbrist och offentliga tjänster:

The impact on local services such as health and education, a shortage of housing, and fears that refugees or asylum seekers may not be properly vetted dominated the concerns that people had.

En stor majoritet, 69 procent av de tillfrågade, är oroade över att behöva ha asylsökande i sin egen stadsdel, men bara 45 procent säger att de skulle protestera:

When asked if they would have concerns if a building in their local area was given over to accommodation asylum seekers, 69% said they would have some concerns, and 28% said they would have no concerns. Of those with concerns, 45% said they would object, while 38% said they would accept it.

När det gäller invandring i ett historiskt perspektiv är bilden något annorlunda: 48 procent säger att invandringen har varit positiv för Irland när man väger för- och nackdelar mot varandra, medan 35 procent säger att den har varit negativ.

Det är inte givet att det framväxande motståndet mot immigration i Irland kommer att ge politiska resultat, men det kan få vissa politiska konsekvenser:

A total of 30% also said they would be more likely to vote for a candidate who voiced concerns about immigration, while 20% said they would be less likely to vote for them.

Sinn Fein-väljare är mer emot invandring än väljare från andra partier, skriver The Journal.
