President Joe Bidens förslag att ge Ukraina ett stort nytt hjälppaket ser ut att få nödvändig majoritet i senaten med hjälp av en republikansk fraktion som leds av Mitch McConnell – som är partiets gruppledare.

Därmed har paketet på 95,3 miljarder dollar, där en del av pengarna går till Israel och Taiwan, efter flera månaders politiskt spel tagit ett långt steg mot förverkligande, skriver Wall Street Journal.

The Senate’s final passage, expected for early Tuesday, comes amid intense GOP infighting over Ukraine, which has been running short of supplies and manpower after a failed counteroffensive against Russia last year. The measure cleared a procedural hurdle late Monday, by a vote of 66 to 33, and a final vote was expected within hours.

Splittringen mellan senatorerna i det republikanska partiet (GOP) sker under påverkan av å ena sidan McConnell och å andra sidan Trump, där den senare är emot att ge Ukraina så mycket pengar och istället har föreslagit ett lån.

Många republikaners stöd till hjälppaketet har varit villkorat av införandet av en radikalt förbättrad gränskontroll vid USA:s södra gräns mot Mexiko, dit miljontals migranter har strömmat in illegalt till landet under Bidens mandat.

Rand Paul anser att hjälppaketet är en förolämpning mot vanliga amerikaner:

Sen. Rand Paul (R., Ky.) called the bill “the middle finger to every working man and woman in America.” He said that it tells Americans, “We don’t care about you. We care more about Ukraine than we care about our southern border.”

Ron Johnson tror att fredslösningar behövs, inte mer pengar:

“If you’re concerned about the Ukrainian people, you ought to do everything you can to bring this war to an end,” said Sen. Ron Johnson (R., Wis.), who opposed the bill. “Again, that’s not to say I’m supporting Putin. He’s an evil war criminal. But he will not lose, he’s not going to lose. And at some point in time, people here need to recognize that reality.”

Ett slutgiltigt godkännande av hjälppaketet kräver också representanthusets samtycke, där republikanerna har majoritet och deras valmötesledare Mike Johnson står på Trumps sida. Johnson förväntas också göra ökad gränssäkerhet till ett villkor.

“House Republicans were crystal clear from the very beginning of discussions that any so-called national security supplemental legislation must recognize that national security begins at our own border,” Speaker Johnson said in a statement on Monday. He said the House “will have to continue to work its own will on these important matters.”
